Istanbul Governorship’s Istanbul Project Coordination Unit Celebrates its 18th Anniversary!
Istanbul Project Coordination Unit of Istanbul Governorship has implemented the Istanbul Seismic Risk Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness Project (ISMEP) since February 6, 2006.
As IPCU we are well aware of Istanbul’s earthquake risk. For the past 18 years, we have been making public buildings built before 1999, including in particular schools and hospitals, earthquake-resistant by retrofitting or reconstructing them.
Since the inception of our mission, we have retrofitted 20.187 classrooms in 799 schools across 39 districts, making them earthquake-safe. Similarly, by reconstructing 367 schools in 39 districts, we have increased the number of classrooms from 7.807 to 12.875, among 5.068 additional classrooms. We have completed retrofitting and reconstruction activities in 1.180 schools and school campuses encompassing 1.386 buildings, providing our city with safe structures in 18 years.
As a part of resilience in terms of healthcare facilities in Istanbul, we reconstructed Prof. Dr. Cemil Taşcıoğlu City Hospital, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yalçın City Hospital, Kartal Dr. Lütfi Kırdar City Hospital, as well as Marmara University (Başıbüyük) Pendik Training and Research Hospital which is the world’s largest hospital reinforced with 829 seismic isolators. Those earthquake-safe hospitals have been handed over to the Ministry of Health.
Besides schools and hospitals, we have completed and delivered a total of 57 Administrative Buildings, 39 Dormitories, and 23 Social Service Buildings.
In the past year 2023, We have reconstructed 16 schools in an earthquake-safe, modern, environmentally friendly, and sustainable way and have retrofitted 31 schools, making them safe for students and teachers. In terms of administrative buildings, we have completed and handed over Çekmeköy District Governorship, covering an area of 13K square meters, which was among our ongoing projects.
